Speaking Truth to Horsepower

I believe what follows is one of the infamous ten percenter pamphlets, this one from the NDP. I don't remember a Liberal one off-hand, and it's hard for me to distinguish the Conservative ten percenters from the stuff they send me because I'm a known right-wing kook. On to exhibit A, which is most of the text from the pamphlet:

I'm biased, but "A hat trick for families" sounds like the kind of slogan you'd come up with if you had a vague understanding of hockey, and a vague understanding of Canada.

The first item is a reference (however compressed) to a noteworthy policy debate. The second item, well, I'm pretty happy with my bank fees and credit card rates (it turns out there's a whole bunch of banks, credit unions, and card issuers, and you can choose from among them for yourself!), but this must verge on an apple-pie issue for the NDP. The third item....

"More freedom for those expensive car repairs"? I'm probably the wrong person to comment on this, since the federal government getting more involved in my car repairs is the kind of nightmare I have that keeps me voting for right-wing kooks. But really, does that resonate for anyone?

It creates for me the sudden and painful fantasy of the National Engine Program. Maybe they could use a tax on gas to federally fund a national system of public auto-repair centres. The possibilities are endless; I'm very excited to find out more.

I went to the NDP website and found out more. It seems to be a piggyback on this American campaign. The NDP's phrasing is so absurd they had me opposing something I'd probably support, or at least not oppose too strenuously.

But hey, their site notes that they want to eliminate the penny! I genuinely support this cause, though I'd probably go further and wipe out everything smaller than a quarter as long as we're cleaning up the currency.

The moral of the story? Fringe parties are fun.
